It seems like less than a week ago I was talking about Chris Tillman and how the Orioles should bring up Brian Matusz to keep fans interested. Well, it just took a line drive off of Brad Bergesen's shin and they listened to me.
Matusz was called up today to make his major league debut. He was the Orioles' first round pick last year and had some great stuff tonight. He went 5 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits with 5 K's. He's got a 5 pitch arsenal and has a good chance at being #2 or 3 in the rotation going into next season.
The only thing that stinks about Matusz being called up is that it may just be a free sample. This is his first year in pro ball, which means his arm stamina may be lower than anyone else on the team. Due to this, expect a shutdown around the beginning of September. He'll be cool to watch 'till then, though
He was looking good last night until the 6th inning. 7 K's in 5 1/3 with no walks is all you can ask for.
ReplyDeleteThe Orioles magic number is 2011. Give these kids another season to get their bearings and then we are playoff bound.
